On Wednesday 20 April 2011, Yahya Berkahanto Juwana will be obtaining his doctorate with his thesis entitled: “Optimizing primary PCI for ST elevation myocardial infarction”.
The research was conducted at the Isala klinieken in Zwolle and the Klinik Kardiovaskular hospital Cinere in Jakarta (Indonesia). The doctorate will be awarded at the RadboudUniversity in Nijmegen.
The research has shown that the execution of an immediate PCI is the best treatment for patients with a myocardial infarction as a result of a closed blood vessel. Improved medicinal treatment in accordance with the guidelines, alongside the use of percutaneous angioplasty treatment, had led to the prognoses for patients with a myocardial infarction improving dramatically over the past decades. The early provision of tirofiban and the positioning of a special stent with the medicine sirolimus can further improve the prognosis.
The thesis also compares the treatment given for a myocardial infarction in the Netherlands compared to treatment provided in Indonesia. Even though there are similarities and the results in Indonesia are good as a result of the immediate percutaneous angioplasty, there is still much to improve there. Primarily, prompt recognition of a myocardial infarction and rapid treatment pose a problem inIndonesia. Yahya Berkahanto Juwana has provided a range of recommendations for improvements.
